At the start world of warcraft seemed like just another game but it soon became obvious that it was not. It immediately became a massive success in the States when it was launched and this success was followed by worldwide growing numbers of players. To date, 2010, World of Warcraft has 11 million active monthly subscribers which is a figure that has stayed steady for many years now.
It is easy to see why the online version of warcraft has become so hugely popular among the gaming community. The game's creators are to be commended for producing so a powerful socially interactive fun-filled media and they should be congratulated for what they have done. Before the work even began on the game Blizzard Entertainment already knew they had an eager market as World of Warcraft is the fourth game in the Warcraft series. However, all three previous Warcraft games had to be played on your own computer with no interaction online or with other players through a network.
No-one was to release just how successful world of warcraft was to become though and that included Blizzard!
So before the game was even created there was an established fan base that was eagerly awaiting the game's release but this does not account for all of its success. There wasn't 11 million Warcraft players waiting for the online version. In fact from that number there are millions who have never played any type of video before!
When the product was eventually unveiled it was praised for living up to the hype around it and actually fulfilling the promises it made to Warcraft fans. This could be another key factor it the game's initial success and continued success.
Blizzard pride themselves on producing high quality products and WoW is no exception. The quality output, in terms of the game, is second to none. There servers rarely experience downtime and the gameplay is seamless making the online version of warcraft a step ahead of its competitors.
The initial five years of preparation and testing were well worth it as the finished product is highly polished.
The fact the World of Warcraft is a highly enjoyable game to play is probably the main reason for its success but just to say that it is enjoyable sells this game short.
You can change the actual game by joining different types of servers. Because WoW gives you the ability to play a different style of game many players have several characters in different types of "realms". This means you can play different realms as different characters.
The social interaction that you get, and which in fact is necessary if you want to progress within the game, is also a key factor in WoW's success. It also helps players develop real team building skills that are very useful in real life. Team skills are not the only benefit you can get from playing world of warcraft however. It has been shown by business experts and many entrepreneurs and business leaders that many key managerial skills are developed by guild leaders within the world of warcraft environment that they find extremely useful in the real world.
